Frequently Asked Questions
I know that starting therapy — or finding the right therapist — often comes with a lot of questions. This page is here to make things easier. Below, you’ll find answers to the most common things people want to know before we begin. If you don’t see your question here, feel free to reach out.
Do you offer a sliding scale?
Yes, I do — though all sliding scale spots are currently full. I encourage people to check back later, as availability sometimes opens up.
Are your services covered by insurance?
I provide digital receipts that can be submitted for insurance reimbursement. As a Registered Social Worker (MSW, RSW) in Ontario, my services are covered under most extended health plans. That said, it’s always best to confirm your individual coverage with your provider.
Do you offer in-person sessions?
No — I work exclusively online. I use the secure video platform integrated into JaneApp, which is simple to use and fully encrypted.
What’s your cancellation policy?
I require 24 hours’ notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Sessions cancelled with less notice are billed at the full fee.
How do I book or reschedule appointments?
Once you're an active client, you can book, cancel, or reschedule appointments anytime through JaneApp’s client portal.
Are you accepting new clients?
Not at the moment. I keep my calendar closed to new bookings so I can remain present and available to current clients. If you'd like to join my waitlist, feel free to email me at john@rochecounselling.com.
Do you work with couples or families?
No — I work exclusively with individuals.
Do you offer clinical consultation?
Yes. I offer professional consultation for therapists seeking support, development, or certification. I’m an EMDRIA Approved Consultant, a Linehan Board Certified DBT Clinician, and a CACBT Certified Cognitive Behaviour Therapist. I provide:
– Modality-specific consultation for certification
– Integrative consultation for professional development
– Mentorship for new therapists
What happens in a first session?
Before our first session, you'll receive a welcome email with intake forms and a contract that outlines our work together. In session, I focus on four key areas:
What brought you to therapy at this moment in your life
Your history, present-day context, and what you’ve been facing
Concrete goals that can guide our work together
Any questions you have about me or the therapy process
How long are sessions?
All individual sessions are 50 minutes. The only exception is for EMDR certification groups, which run for 80 minutes and include three participants.
