Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS)
Understanding Your Inner World.
What It Is:
IFS is a powerful, insight-oriented therapy based on the idea that we’re not just one single “self” — we’re made up of many inner parts, each with their own feelings, beliefs, and histories. You might have a critical part, a people-pleasing part, a scared or childlike part — and each one plays a role, often developed in response to life’s challenges.
Rather than getting rid of these parts, IFS invites you to get to know them. The goal is to build a relationship with them from the perspective of your core Self — the calm, compassionate centre that exists in all of us beneath the noise.
What It Can Help With:
Anxiety and depression
Trauma and PTSD
Eating disorders and body image issues
Addiction
Chronic shame, inner conflict, or harsh self-criticism
Relational difficulties
How It Works:
In IFS, you’ll learn to identify different parts of yourself and explore their intentions — even the ones that seem extreme or self-sabotaging. You’ll begin to understand what these parts are protecting you from, and what they might need to heal. With the support of your therapist, you’ll access your Self-energy — a place of inner calm, curiosity, and care — and help lead your internal system toward integration.
Why It Works:
Though research on IFS is still growing, early studies show its effectiveness for depression, anxiety, and complex trauma. More importantly, many clients describe IFS as deeply healing and transformational. It’s gentle, empowering, and can help you cultivate self-trust and inner harmony.

“It is important to look into the shadows of our lives and to see who lives there, tattered, withered, hungry, and alone. Bringing these parts of soul back to the table is a central element of our work. Ending their exile means releasing the contempt we hold for these parts of who we are. It means welcoming the full range of our being and restoring our wholeness. Until then, we will continue to carry a feeling of worthlessness and brokenness.”
